Raccoons are mammals native to the Americas notable for their thumbs, which allow them to open many closed containers and doors. They are intellegent omnivores with a reputation for slyness and mischief. Raccoons are nocturnal and their diets consists of berries, insects, eggs, and small animals. One of the most recognizible traits of the raccoon is its seeming obsession with washing its food although it is unlikely that this is the case. Some studies have found that the washing motion is engaged in when water is not available.
Many people have adopted raccoons as pets. It is highly recommended that you carefully consider this before doing it. Because of their intelligence and knack for mischief these little bandits required a lot of attention and ongoing training. Being nocturnal they also have to be "trained" to be morning people.
